Currently, more than 80% of issues I see on projects stem from poor requirements and poor design. Many organizations I talk with are not keeping pace with digital innovations; in particular, they are not taking advantage of the latest techniques in UX design and embracing a holistic immersive experience. This lack of innovation creates slower time to market for products and a less engaged client base, eventually leading to eroding revenue and competition that can seem overwhelming as the rest of the world embraces the latest UX design innovations.

Organizations that want to create more efficiency in their requirements, design phases, and processes should conduct the following key activities:

  • Conduct research strategically, carefully planning for efficiency and to gain maximum value. For example, make sure to conduct the right type of research at the right time and leverage stakeholders’ knowledge of their audiences/users to shape all research plans. That way , less time will be wasted researching items that could be learned internally.
  • Facilitate early-stage UX-focused workshops with stakeholders to set each project’s strategy and capture all high-level requirements so the UX can begin designing earlier.
  • Use rapid wireframing and prototyping tools  to quickly create designs, facilitate discussion, and come to agreement on features and workflow.
  • Focus on wireframing key screens, workflows, templates and components for developers to implement in full, rather than designing every page.
  • Take advantage of tools like Sketch, Invision and Zeplin that allow a creative team to work in the same files and rapidly move from wireframes to prototypes, comps, specs and assets, saving time and reducing rework.
  • Generate pixel-perfect cut graphics and CSS styles ready for developers to quickly implement in their code, rather than lengthy requirements documents they have difficulty understanding.
  • Work together across roles to create a shared understanding of strategy, requirements and design, rather than attempting “blind” hand-offs.

When these activities are conducted as described, our experience shows that the overall quality of the end product is exponentially better, overall project risk is significantly reduced and clients are able to save on project development costs by cutting down the time it takes to design and develop features and functions.
